What is "self-practice" Ashtanga Yoga?
A "self-practice" or "mysore-style" class is the traditional form of Ashtanga yoga as taught by the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, South India. "Self-practice" is suitable for all levels, including absolute beginners. In a way, it is like private class in a group environment. A "self- practice" style class allows each student to work at their own pace, following the rhythm of their own breath while receiving personal attention, physical assists and instruction from the teacher. Students can start their practice at any time during the session – the length of practice and time needed will vary for each student.
Who is the class for?
The class is open to all levels. I am happy to have those who are complete beginners to Ashtanga yoga as well as those practicing up to Pincha Mayurasana in the second series.
New Venue
From Tuesday 1 November The Musicale building which sits in front of St George’s School on Sun Lane in Harpenden AL5 will become the class’ new home.
New extended time to practice
For those of you with an ever-lengthening practice you'll be happy to know that I have extended the class time to accommodate the capacity for a full series practice in an hour and 1/2. So, I will do the opening chant at 9.30 and the closing chant at 11.00. Feel free to come for as long as is suitable for your practice.
Why the change?
A couple of reasons: the studio at Musicale will be warmer and it’s good to be closer to home, allowing for an earlier class start time after school drop off.
What’s the cost?
If you stay for the full hour and ½ then the cost is £12 to drop in or you can buy a 10 class pass for £100. If you stay for an hour then the drop in price is £10 or £80 for a 10 class pass. Class passes are valid for 3 months from the date of issue. Class passes can also be used at my Sunday morning Ashtanga class at Roundwood Park School AL5.
Hope to see you there!
